VAZHAKAI PODIMOS

(Plantain mashed curry)

INGREDIENTS

 

2 green plantains (raw bananas)

1 tsp. urad dal

1 tsp. chana dal

1 whole dried red chilli

1/2 tsp. mustard seeds

1 tsp. oil

salt to taste

pinch of hing

1/2 tsp. tamarind powder (or, 1/2 tsp. paste mixed in as little water as possible)

1 tsp. mysore rasam powder

2-3 curry leaves

 

METHOD

Boil plantains with the skin water for 10 min. Cool, peel and mash. Add salt, hing, tamarind and rasam powder. Mix well. Heat oil, add mustard, when they splutter, break the red chilli in 2 and add. Then add the dals and fry till red. Add the curry leaves and pour over the mashed plantains.

 

This is an excellent south Indian curry and can be served as a side dish.

 

Serves: 3-4 adults
